De Mannen van de Radio
Mannen van de Radio (trans. Men of the Radio) is a Dutch series of absurd sketches from VPRO radio's "De Avonden" (trans. The Evenings). Almost every day between 1995 and 1997, Pieter Bouwman, Hans Teeuwen (and sometimes Theo Maassen) would improvise live on radio. The subjects are usually absurd and bizarre, and the stories usually have one or more sudden twists.
The last sketch was broadcast on August 10, 2004. Some sketches were published on CD. However, two hundred sketches were never published, but have been recorded by fans.
The sketches are usually interviews, in which a person tells about his experiences, a book he has written, a disease, et cetera. Some sketches feature a phone call, and many feature stories about Germany, violence or sex. In many sketches things grow to absurd and impossible sizes. An example is 'Het 3000-delig zakmes' (trans. Pocket knife with 3000 parts), which is useless, lies on a field and includes besides just knives and scissors objects like a lorry, five restaurants and a tiny corkscrew (which is unfortunately a bit too small to remove thick corks).
In many sketches you can hear Hans Teeuwen and Pieter Bouwman laugh themselves. They were often smoking and eating while improvising, indicating they didn't take it seriously. Read more on Last.fm.
